These are horrendous figures, there needs to be more discussion of this in the public sphere for the sake of our relatives, friends and the general population. As a child I can think of three situations when I was in danger, but because nothing happened ultimately I didn't bear any scars but if my daughters were in the same situation I would have been very disturbed. One way I can think of to start tackling the problem, although steps have been taken and it certainly wouldnt eliminate it, would be to avoid systemic failures like we have seen in the church and to reduce possibilities for predators, though it is not only predators who are to blame. We need to educate children to avoid certain situations and to a have healthy and realistic conception of human nature. Attitudes towards women and vulnerable people must improve and respect for others should be taught as well as some form of sexual ethics in schools. But I feel that it is such a deep problem that it is only with deep engagement that we will see what solutions can be adopted. I feel disarmed and slightly powerless, but at the same time feel that dialogue and communication is crucial and good as a first step to dealing with this issue
Thank you. I am so fed up.
A much needed post on information needed by all.
